Our Vineyard

Selected by Howard and Judy Carter after an exhaustive search of South-Eastern Australia, the site was chosen in 1994 for its unique combination of climate, aspect and soil - not to mention the spectacular views afforded across the Valley floor to the imposing Mount Donna Buang.

Situated in a north facing natural amphitheatre, the site is sheltered from the prevailing westerly weather which contributes to the long mild autumns - ideal for the slow, even ripening required to produce grapes of elegant and complex flavour.

Grape varieties grown at Bulong Estate include Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Prior to planting, careful consideration was given to which clones of each variety were to be planted to ensure that final blended wines are well balanced and have all the components and complexity required to ensure wines of the highest calibre. The first vines were planted in 1995 and we have some of the oldest Pinot Gris vines in the Yarra Valley.

The vineyard produces truly exceptional fruit. Our dedicated vineyard team, led by Mal Wood, works hard to ensure that each parcel of fruit makes it to havest in optimal condition, with maximum flavour.

Our Winemaker

Matt Carter has extensive experience both in Australia and overseas and his primary aim is to grow the best possible fruit in the first place. Over a number of years he has changed or modified many vineyard blocks in the quest for better and better fruit. His vineyard practices vary from variety to variety, block to block.

Matt likes to let the fruit express itself without too much interference. He only uses the finest quality French oak and the proportion of new to seasoned varies depending upon the season and the variety.

The quality of Matt's wines have resulted in numerous awards including "Best Sauvignon Blanc" trophy at the 2010 National Wine Show and receiving a 5 stars Winery rating from James Halliday in his 2012 edition of the Australian Wine Companion.

Our Winery

Situated in the middle of the vineyard our hand picked fruit is never far away. The Winery can handle small parcels of fruit and Matt keeps these parcels seperate for as long as possible, in order to assess the subtle differences before final blending.

All bottling is conducted on site by Matt and the vineyard team, and all our wine is sealed with Stelvin closures ensuring that there are no comprimises at the final stage of the winemaking process.
