Bulong Estate is a 46 hectare wine growing property situated on the outskirts of the township of Yarra Junction in the upper reaches of the Yarra Valley - one of Australia's premium wine regions.
Situated around 60km to the east of Melbourne the local area provides the scenic grandeur and natural beauty for which the Australian countryside is renowned and is within easy reach of Melbourne.
Selected by Howard and Judy Carter after an exhaustive search of South-Eastern Australia, the site was chosen in 1994 for its unique combination of climate, aspect and soil - not to mention the spectacular views afforded across the Valley floor to the imposing Mount Donna Buang.
Bulong Estate sits in a north facing amphitheatre. The site is sheltered from the prevailing westerly weather by the natural surroundings which contribute to the long mild autumns - ideal for the slow, even ripening required to produce grapes of elegant and complex flavour.

Howard Picking Grapes

.

Grape varieties grown at Bulong Estate include Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Prior to planting, careful consideration was given to which clones of each variety were to be planted to ensure that final blended wines are well balanced and have all the components and complexity required to ensure wines of the highest calibre.

Also critical to the production of quality grapes, and hence wine, at Bulong Estate is meticulous canopy management. We tailor our pruning and shoot positioning according to the variety and flavour profiles required. In order to maintain an open and well spaced vine canopy a number of management practices are used including shoot positioning using a variety of systems and shoot and leaf removal from around the bunch zone.

The name "Bulong Estate" is derived from the aboriginal word "bulong" which means "a place where water was once drunk through bark" - it is now a place where wine is drunk from a glass!
