Bulong Estate sits in a north facing amphitheatre. The site is sheltered from the prevailing westerly weather by the natural surroundings which contribute to the long mild autumns – ideal for the slow, even ripening required to produce grapes of elegant and complex flavour.

The soils are predominantly grey loam over clay, with slopes ranging from slight through to steep on the higher blocks. To assist in water drainage during Winter and Spring, when the bulk of the rainfall occurs, sub-surface drainage has been installed across the whole vineyard.

Grape varieties grown at Bulong Estate include Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Prior to planting, careful consideration was given to which clones of each variety were to be planted to ensure that final blended wines are well balanced and have all the components and complexity required to ensure wines of the highest calibre.

Also critical to the production of quality grapes, and hence wine, at Bulong Estate is meticulous canopy management. In order to maintain an open and well spaced vine canopy a number of management practices are used including shoot positioning using the Smart-Dyson system and shoot and leaf removal from around the bunch zone.

A drip irrigation system was installed at the time of vineyard planting assist the young vines to establish strong growth during their first summers. However, irrigation is now only used to avoid excess stress during critical growth periods on the mature vines.

"Bulong" - Where water was once drunk through bark, now where wine is drunk from a glass.
