Around February every year the first fruit picked is the contracted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for sparkling base. We start at twilight and continue until dawn. In the distance the harvester is a low rumble. The noise intensifies as it gets closer until it is a dull roar. We turn at the end of the row and continue on down the next one. Over and over again.
In three nights we pick over half the vineyard and then it is onto the hand picking, which will take in the next two weeks. We pick the Pinot Noir destined for the Mac Forbes Single Vineyard label, then it is Pinot Gris for Innocent Bystander (Brownbrothers) and in between we pick and make wine for our own single vineyard label.
